The South Moluccan Movement

The Moluccan people have been victims of colonialism and neo-colonialism for 419 years.

Colonialism is the occupation and exploitation of (overseas) territories through the establishment of the ruler. Political domination, social and economic exploitation of the local population are central. In addition, (neo-)colonialism continues today in images, language, culture and religion.

The Moluccas was a popular destination in the past. This was due to the clove and nutmeg trees that for a long time only grew on our islands. Various successive European powers such as the Portuguese, the Spanish, the English and finally the Dutch all came with the same goal in mind: the monopoly of the spice trade.

When the Dutch colonizer officially left the Dutch East Indies in 1949, her place was taken by a new colonizer (neocolonizer): the Javanese

The South Moluccas have been occupied and exploited for almost 75 years by theJavanese. Since the capture and isolation of Sultan Muhammad Jabir Syah (†), the North Moluccas have been used as puppets for multinationals by Java. Sultan Muhammad Jabir Syah (†) was in favor of a separate Moluccan state.

Strangely enough, the Moluccas are still one of the poorest areas of Indonesia, while they are rich in mineral resources such as nickel, copper and gold, 25 undeveloped gas and oil fields including the (LNG) gas bubble of the Masela block, and the large fish stock in the Moluccan Sea.

Despite these natural resources, the Moluccan people do not experience prosperity. How is that possible? Mercy Barends openly says during a press conference that this is because those in power in Jakarta have been conscious of poverty towards the Moluccans for years: Maluku is deliberately kept poor… Why do we allow our own culture, traditions and social systems to be broken down and the survival of the Moluccan people to be threatened?

We have to choose! Struggle against the neo-colonialism of the Javanese occupier or live like a beggar in your own country. Our children and grandchildren are slowly but surely in danger of losing their future.
